William N. Taylor made the first land purchase in the area. In 1835 he returned to New York to get married and brought his bride back in 1837. Arlington Township was organized in 1842 and named at the suggestion Revolutionary War veteran James Stevens after his native town in Vermont. The Chicago & Western Michigan Railroad made a stop in the Township. Calvin C. Biglow became the first postmaster on May 7, 1852. The office was closed on December 27, 1859 and later restored and operated from March 5, 1860 to February 28, 1871. (Ellis; PO Archives)
