Antwerp Township
Antwerp Township was first settled by Joel Tomlinson in 1834 and Joseph Woodman in 1835. The Township was organized in 1837 and named by its then oldest inhabitant, Harmon Van Antwerp, after Antwerp, Belguim. Reason Holmes, the tavern keeper, became its first postmaster on May 23, 1842. On January 5, 1849 the office was moved and renamed Mattawan. (Ellis; GSM 1860; PO Archives)
