Groundwater-- Everyone's resource Everyone's responsibility.
Groundwater is a critical resource for Michigan residents, farmers, and industries. Half of Michigan's residents rely on groundwater for their drinking water. Groundwater also recharges our surface waters, which are used for recreation and are habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms. Preventing groundwater contamination is necessary to sustain our health, our property values, and our quality of life hear in Michigan. Your activities can make a difference.
Mission: To provide information and assessment tools for pesticide and nitrogen fertilier users which help them identify risks to groundwater associated with their chemical use practices and to coordinate local, state, and gederal resources to help individuals reduce those risks.
The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program addresses the needs and concerns of both the agricultural and residential sectors. With the assistance of Kyle Mead, Groundwater Technician, farmers in Van Buren and Allegan Counties can complete a voluntary, free, and confidential Farm*A*Syst groundwater risk assessment of their farms. The benefits of a Farm*A*Syst include Restricted Use Pesticide credits, technical assistance, and cost sharing for groundwater protection improvements.
